Education is imperative for individuals to make informed decisions regarding their healthcare. The earlier that students are introduced to the topic of organ and tissue donation- the easier it will be for them to make an informed decision when they apply for their Driver’s License and are asked whether they would like to be an organ and tissue donor.

MORA provides a curriculum that can be adapted to suit various classes such as Drivers Education, Health & Wellness, Biology, Allied Health and others. In fact, the Mississippi Driver’s Education curriculum requires instruction relating to organ and tissue donation under the *2014 Mississippi Code Chapter 25-Driver Education and Training-37-25-5. MORA’s curriculum explains the need for organ eye and tissue donation, how the process works, dispels myths about the subject and also encourages students to start the conversation with their families regarding organ donation. *2014 Mississippi Code Chapter 25 – Driver Education and Training – 37-25-5

The State Superintendent of Public Education shall prepare and recommend to the State Board of Education, and the board shall adopt rules and regulations governing the establishment, conduct and scope of driver education and training programs in secondary schools of this state, subject to the requirements and exceptions set forth in this chapter.  Said program shall be established and maintained only in accordance with such rules and regulations.  The state driver education and training program in secondary schools of this state shall include a program of study for alcohol and safety education as it pertains to driver and highway safety and shall also include instruction relating to organ and tissue donation and organ and tissue donation procedures.

Scholarships

MORA will award seven scholarships totaling $11,265 including:

  • Allie Carruth Memorial Scholarship ($5,000)
  • Walker Wilbanks Memorial Scholarship ($2,265)
  • Matthew Gaskin Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)
  • Annie Lucious Gift of Life Scholarship ($1,000)
  • Dr. Shirley Schlessinger Scholarship ($1,000)
  • Two $500 Scholarships

Scholarship Guidelines (*Excludes Walker Wilbanks Scholarship):

  1. The student must be a graduating senior from an accredited Mississippi high school.
  2. After graduation from high school, the student must be accepted by or have intentions of fall enrollment in either a junior college or university in the state of Mississippi.
  3. A GPA of 2.5 or higher
  4. Two letters of recommendation: one from a school teacher and one from an adult of your choice.
  5. An essay of 300 to a maximum of 750 words will be required on one of the following topics:
    • Why you are a registered organ and tissue donor
    • The importance of encouraging others to be an organ and tissue donor
    • How have you or your family been affected by organ and tissue donation or by transplantation of organs  and /or tissue
    • Why you want to be an organ and tissue donor

Walker Wilbanks Memorial Scholarship Guidelines:

An administrator, faculty or staff may nominate a high school senior attending a college or university Fall 2020 by submitting a one page letter on behalf of a student based on his or her character traits (i.e. courage, integrity, accountability, respect, responsibility, concern for others, etc.).
