MORA to Host Special Event at Two MS Museums

January 14, 2025

We are thrilled to host Influencing the Future of Donation for a second year (2.20.2025) as we express our gratitude to community leaders who gave their voice to support the latest Yes You Should Campaign phase (including Bluesman Bobby Rush, Comedienne Rita Brent, Bishop Ronnie Crudup, Sheriff Tyree Jones, Dr. Mark Henderson, and Rep. Bennie Thompson) and explore how we can further transform the conversation around organ and tissue donation in our state. This event is open to everyone—donor families, recipients, those waiting for transplants, their loved ones, and anyone interested in learning more about how organ and tissue donation impacts and saves lives every day. It is past time to get serious about helping our neighbors. Space is limited! Get your tickets online today at: msora.org/join-us or scan the QR code below.

You may have seen our Yes You Should campaign, designed to encourage more Mississippians to register as organ donors. To help spread this important message, MORA partnered with local community leaders—from a Congressman to Comedians and others in between—to highlight why organ and tissue donation is such a critical topic in our state. While donors and recipients from different ethnic backgrounds can and do often match, everyone on the transplant waiting list has a better chance of receiving the needed organ(s) when there are many donors from their racial or ethnic background.

Compatible blood types and tissue markers, which play a crucial role in matching donors with recipients, are more likely to be found among people of the same ethnicity. The more people from your ethnic group who are willing to donate, the more likely you or your loved one are to find a timely, compatible match with a successful long-term outcome. In Mississippi, almost 70% of patients waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant, including 90% of those who are waiting for a kidney, are Black/African-American. One reason for these high percentages is higher rates of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes—diseases that lead to organ failure.

Join us as we work together to increase understanding and donor registration.
We hope to see you in February at this special event. Get your tickets here: msora.org/join-us
